Cayo Cangrejo

Providence and San Andres are partly volcanic but are protected by coral reefs. There is a National Park and protected area. Lots of people dive or go snorkeling.

Southwest bay and the sea

Southwest Bay is the longest bay and has fewer hotels than Freshwater Bay. We found it charming and uncrowded in the off season.

This community looks out for each other. The houses have the distinct English flavor of the islands.

Posada Miss Lupe

We stayed in a local Posada, with chickens and a peacock in the yard. The beach was just a few yards away. The men repainted and launched a boat. We could here the local creole spoken. We had a kitchenette and made simple breakfasts and dinners to eat on the veranda. Miss Lupe's daughter Natalia gave me a cooking lesson. They had airconditioning and ceiling fans, but the coolest place in the afternoon was the living/dining area.

The ports and the catamaran

Rather than flying, we took the catamaran Sensation between San Andres and Santa Isabela on Providence. The trip took about three hours each way and was bouncy.
